WoW session
today.
WoW, or Workout of the Week, is something
unique to DCU Sport Centre I think, I may be mistaken. It’s basically a short 20
minute session of crossfit type exercises. It’s different each week but it
usually goes : you have a partner and a group of exercises that you share because
there’s no rest time. For example the one we did today was two minutes of
burpees, 2 minutes of jump squats, press-ups etc. It was outside on the all
weather pitches. My partner and me decided on a strategy of 15 reps each until
the bell went to move to the next exercise.
I used to
do it every week and always found It the toughest session. I hadn’t done it in
a few months because Wednesday became our run day so this was my first day
back. I felt it fit in perfectly with the three pillars I decided on for
replicating H&B.
There is an
added bonus in this session in the trainer. He is one of the best trainers in
DCU. This is not to denigrate the very high level of professional expertise
that all the trainers in DCU have, but he has one very fine quality in a
trainer which is he really doesn’t give a shite whether you like him or not. He
is every bit the drill Sergeant out of a Vietnam war movie and when he shouts
at you to go faster you do, if only to spite him, basically the perfect coach.
I was like
a demon on the pitch. I have never given me all in WoW as much as I did today and
now I know I must have been holding back every other time. I can’t describe how
much having a set goal like H&B really gets your mind into the right place.
Once you know giving up or resting isn’t an option you’re body just follows
along. I’ve always hated burpees because the movement seemed so unnatural but for
once I was up and then straight on the ground then up again with no sneaky
little ¼ second rest on the ground like I normally do.
My partner was a colleague from another department that I know but don’t train with. He
wouldn’t be as fit as some of us but even if he was he couldn’t have kept me
pace, so much in the zone as I was.
He must have been a bit annoyed when he realised in the first minute I was going all out, but it worked out good because I was giving him encouragement
(a nice lesson I’d learned from Al) and I think he was glad he pushed himself
farther than normal.
I was actually cursing and roaring by the end, which was
commented on later by another friend, I am quite self conscious about stuff
like that but everyone is mostly a regular so they’ve already forgiven me for
this type of carry on, I hope!
Conclusion
- brilliant session. The only problem is how to escalate this. The routine
changes every week so maybe I don’t need to worry about this. Otherwise all I
can think of is annoying the trainer so he goes harder on us, I can tell him I
had a whole packet of Pringles on the weekend or something that seems to
genuinely make him angry.
I think I’ve given him a bit of a slagging
here so I should finish with seriously – top notch A1 coach, he’s a complete
pro in everything fitness.
